One of the most popular drug with around 37 million written prescriptions for just a year are the group of medicine called bisphosphonates. Now, the reported adverse effects of the drug is slowly changing this thing. A few of these reported adverse effects are femur fractures and osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). Now, 36 lawsuits are currently filed in New Jersey Superior Court concerning a bisphosphonate drug called Fosamax.
Generically, Fosamax is famous for being an alendronate sodium. Bisphosphonates are a group of medicines where this drug belongs and helps in the bone cycle formation. The mechanism of action of the drug slows down bone loss while increasing bone mass helping in the prevention of bone fracture.
Men and women may both benefit from bisphosphonates like Fosamax for their osteoporosis especially if it is due to menopause or the use of steroids. People with brittled and malformed bones or people afflicted with Paget’s Disease may also find help in this drug. People with low bone mineral density or osteopenia may also benefit from this drug.
Oftentimes, bisphosphonate therapy has some issues with drug to drug interaction. Femur fracture problems are now being considered among other drugs.
Besides the anticipated effects, bisphosphonates intake may also cause unintended or side effects to the body, some of which are positive otherwise less favorable. However, off-label use of the drug should not be practiced because of its possible serious consequences.
